I was a French teacher at Newton Country Day from 2000 to 2002. As a foreigner, I felt immediately at ease chatting with Charlie. He was the most cheerful person I met there. I used to laugh out loud with him about the most random anecdote or joke. I just found out about his death as I live in France. I will never forget you, Charlie. Bises d'ici bas, Cecilia

Story shared: A day trip to the Cloisters

When we were undergrads at Fordham, my girlfriend Betty (now my wife of almost 49 years) wanted to walk up the hill to New York City's Cloisters museum. We invited Mr. Hodges to a pre-visit picnic lunch, and he repaid us giving us an inspiring tour of a museum we had thought we knew quite well.

What a teacher. The man we knew as "Mr. Hodges" was the best professor in my life. What I try to do in the classroom (I'm a professor of English at Texas A&M University at Galveson) is to some extent modeled on his behavior. He remains my inspiration of what a teacher and a good man can be.
